About Dr John Barry

Dr John Barry (PhD, MSc, BA, FBPsS, DHyp, CPsychol), is a chartered psychologist clinical hypnotherapist, and psychology researcher. After graduating with an honours degree in psychology (University of Sussex), and embarking on a counselling training course, John Barry became eager to find a method of therapy that produced good results rapidly. After training with the London College of Clinical Hypnosis and receiving a diploma in Clinical Hypnosis (DHyp) from the Psychotherapy and Hypnosis Training Association at Regent’s College (now Regent’s University), Dr Barry started his hypnotherapy practice in London in 1999.

Since then he has helped hundreds of people with issues such as anxiety, relationship problems and smoking cessation. Due to a growing interest in links between the mind and health, he took a part-time MSc in Health Psychology (University of Westminster). This led to a PhD in Psychology (City University London) after which he worked as a researcher at University College London (UCL) and became a Member of the exclusive British Society of Clinical and Academic Hypnosis.

Some of John’s work on hypnosis has been published, including a treatment for relationship problems, and his groundbreaking research on the impact of relaxation therapy on wellbeing and hormone levels in women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS).

What is Hypnotherapy?

There are so many conditions that can be helped with hypnotherapy, it is not possible to list them all in any great detail here. If there is a condition that is not listed here that you would like to know if hypnotherapy may be able to help, please contact Dr John Barry here.
It’s always good advice to consult your GP for any issues. If you have been diagnosed or suspect you may have a medical condition, you should consult your GP for advice, diagnosis and treatment. Always inform your health professional before starting any alternative or additional therapies or treatments.

What happens in a session?

  • What is hypnosis?
Hypnosis is said to be an altered state of mind akin to deep relaxation. It occurs naturally when we are fully engrossed in any activity. In hypnotherapy, this heightened concentration is harnessed and focused to treat problems such as anxiety or cigarette addiction.
  • What sort of problem can be helped with hypnosis?
Stress, anxiety, smoking, phobias, panic attacks, depression, slimming, high blood pressure, insomnia, public speaking, blushing, IBS, and more. I specialize in using hypnotherapy for polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and men’s mental health issues.
  • Is it like sleep?
Although the experience is very relaxing and can have a dream-like quality, you are usually aware throughout the session.
  • Is a hypnotised person under the hypnotherapists controls?
No. It is extremely rare there somebody can be hypnotised against their will, or made to do or say anything they don’t want to.
  • Will I be able to remember everything?
Amnesia rarely occurs, but when it does it is perfectly natural and safe.
  • What if I can’t be hypnotised?
There are degrees of hypnotic trances, but if you are willing to be hypnotized, you can be hypnotized.
  • Does it work?
Hypnosis is not a magical cure, but there is a good success rate for those who are sincerely motivated in overcoming their problem. I have conducted professional research on the benefits of these types of techniques on polycystic ovary syndrome.
  • Why should I choose hypnotherapy?
Most people find that hypnotherapy is a quick, pleasant, and relatively easy way to solve their problems.
  • Is it safe?
Hypnotherapy is completely safe, although people with epilepsy, bipolar disorder, or schizophrenia should check with their consultant before undergoing hypnosis.
  • What will it be like?
Typically it is a very pleasant and relaxing experience, sometimes like vivid day dreaming.

Testimonials

“John helped me before a high stakes medical school entry exam, as well as offering insights and strategies regarding hormone management in relation to PCOS and general stress. I have since gained a place at medical school and am thrilled that the process was so much less stressful than I’d anticipated. I would recommend and return to him without hesitation”
A.M., Bury St Edmunds

“6 months after our hypnotherapy session (well, one day short) and I have not had a cigarette nor, indeed, have I had an inclination for one. I only wish I had come to you years before I did”
Kevin, London

“I have found working with John extremely beneficial to my general well being. I originally got in touch whilst experiencing a period of severe stress and anxiety related issues. I had tried hypnotherapy in the past, to varying degrees of success, but John’s approach to hypnotherapy mixed with talking therapy has been very effective. I feel I have made genuine, sustainable progress and would recommend John’s services highly.”
Nick, London
