Name of Therapist Alexandra Peake Bsc(Hons) MCPP Medical Herbalist
Description of therapy
As a Medical Herbalist I have completed three years training at Westminster University and qualified with a Bsc Hons Herbal Medicine. This includes study of anatomy, physiology, pathology, pharmacology and diagnostics to a high level. Herbalists combine orthodox medical knowledge and skills with traditional and scientific knowledge of medicinal plants. Modern Herbal Medicine has adapted to a recent worldwide growth in scientific information on plant drugs and their effective and safe use. The methods used to evaluate herbal medicines are similar to those used by orthodox medicine. Yet, a herb contains many active ingredients unlike the single chemical in a drug and may have several actions to support the body’s health. Each patient is taken as a unique individual when making a a diagnosis and assessing treatment requirements. Any herbal medicine prescribed may be a combination of plants chosen for the therapeutic actions required to treat that individual.
Specific conditions treatable
Examples of conditions where herbal treatment can help: respiratory disorders, circulatory conditions such as high cholesterol, digestive complaints such as IBS and indigestion, fatigue, skin disorders, arthritic pain and rheumatism, menstrual pain and PMS. It is my experience that herbal medicine can be beneficial in many different health conditions.
Benefits of therapy
Herbalists provide their patients with a treatment that is unique for their health needs. It is an holistic treatment that aims to address the underlying causes of disease. Your herbal medicines will be chosen to avoid interaction with any current medication, so can be used alongside doctors’ orthodox treatments. It is a gentle form of medicine that supports the body's systems and can safely be used for babies and children.
How it works
Medicinal plants contain pharmacologically active ingredients and are used to safely treat many health conditions in adults and children. Medicinal plants are selected mainly to stimulate or strengthen the body’s normal functions, thus helping the body to heal itself. Unlike orthodox drugs that have a single ingredient, plant medicines contain many ingredients and may have several simultaneous therapeutic actions in the body.
What happens in a session / Length of session
Your first consultation will take about one hour, during which information will be gathered about your health, lifestyle, diet, past health problems and any required examinations will be completed.
An individually tailored treatment plan will be proposed and discussed then herbal medicines may be prescribed and dispensed for you to collect or receive in the post. To monitor progress and evaluate the treatment further visits may be needed, which last about 20 to 30 minutes.
Herbal medicines can come in various forms such as capsules, teas, syrups, creams and tinctures (a liquid extraction of the herb in alcohol and water).
