Name of Therapy McTimoney Chiropractic and Koren Specific Technique (KST)

Name of Therapist Sue Cunningham BSc Hons Chiro MMCA

Description of therapy

Chiropractic aims to realign the bones and joints of the body with the aim of improving function of the nervous system and the body as a whole.

McTimoney chiropractic is a gentle method that uses very light precise adjustments by hand to assess and rebalance the whole skeleton from top to toe.

Koren Specific Technique (KST) uses a targeted approach of very low force adjustments to release patterns of tension in whatever position they usually occur . Adjustments are made using an instrument that delivers a rapid light tapping.

I usually bases my sessions on the McTimoney technique and add in KST when appropriate.

Specific conditions treatable

Chiropractors seek to improve function to the body as a whole rather than treat specific conditions but as most people turn up with an 'ouch' here are some examples of common problems that often respond well to chiropractic care:

Back, neck and shoulder pain, musular aches, pain and stiffness in joints, migraine, arthritic pain, sports injuries.

Benefits of therapy

As well as being helpful for a wide range of common problems (see above) my clients often describe experiencing a sense of relaxation and 'lightness' after a session, often followed by a good nights sleep! Improvements to posture and flexibility are usually found although this may take time, depending on an individuals starting point. Many clients also report a feeling of general well-being after treatment and for some chiropractic is what 'keeps them going' during periods of their life where they are juggling a lot of stresses and strains.

How it works

Any stress that exceeds our ability to process it creates tension in our bodies. For example just think how you feel when you're having a really bad day -  your posture changes, neck and shoulder muscles get tense, you get cross and emotional and you may end up with a thumping headache! If this is just one bad day your body should be able to let go of that tension but if it's isn't then it may stay there. Over time the tight muscles pull on the bones, this restricts the joints and our body starts to have to compensate. This creates more tension and so on.

We are not always aware of this underlying tension held in our bodies. Our conscious mind is usually too busy to notice it unless we really think about it.  It's often not until something starts to hurt that we realise there is a problem. It's at this point that people usually arrive at my door. Sometimes there's been years of low-level problems before they come to me, sometimes the problem seems to arrive suddenly out of the blue, either way my role is to assess them and then to work on releasing that build up of tension. I do this by adjusting the spine because its a really effective way to access the body to release those patterns of compensation and to reset the joints and muscles into a more efficient way of functioning.

What happens in a session?

During the first session I will talk through your current problem and review your medical history and lifestyle. Once I've explained how I work and you have had a chance to ask any questions I assess your posture, movement and structure. This involves mainly using my hands to feel the spine, pelvis and other joints and any orthopaedic and neurological tests that are needed. You may be asked to remove some clothing but a gown will be available. If appropriate a chiropractic treatment is given and advice to help you get the best from the session.

Standard sessions usually involve a shorter consultation and a treatment.
