BBC NEWS Yoga 'can help to cut back pain' Regular yoga sessions may be an effective way to combat chronic lower back pain, research suggests.

A team from Seattle's Group Health Cooperative Centre for Health Studies assessed 101 adults with back pain. Those who practiced weekly 75-minute yoga classes made greater progress than those who took part in strengthening and stretching classes. The researchers found that they were better able to do daily activities involving the back, they also reported less pain, and used less pain relieving drugs. Researcher Dr Karen Sherman said: "Most people have experienced back pain at some point in their lives. "Sometimes the pain goes away in a few days, but sometimes it lasts for weeks, and unfortunately, the treatments offered by modern Western medicine are only modestly effective."

CAROLE BAKER B.Sc. Catering & Business Admin.

Carole ’s Yoga journey began in 1995 after the birth of her second daughter via caesarean section.

“It was when my Grandma asked me if I was pregnant again, that I thought I had to do something about my shape and size! I started attending a regular gentle class and was surprised how, even when I didn’t feel as if I was doing much, I would always feel my muscles the following day or two. I got addicted to a Power Yoga Class a couple of years later and found that it gave me great strength & flexibility but also toned my shape and energised me too”.

3 years after the addiction to yoga began; she completed the British Wheel of Yoga Teacher’s Diploma course, recognised as the governing body for Yoga in the UK and affiliated to Sport England. It is the most widely sought after teaching diploma there is.

“I started teaching in Health Clubs and Village Halls and finally realised that I didn’t have to put up with cold, smelly, dirty rooms and the idea for the self centre was born”.

She now teaches a stimulating Power Class, a gentle and rejuvenating Vitality Class and is responsible for the very young – Ante-Natal and Post- Natal Mums, Teens and the over 50’s. “Yoga is a journey, and I am still heading along my pathway of discovery, everyone is different and everyone finds their place, that is the beauty of it!”

SIOBHAN KEMP

Siobhan began her yoga as a grudging add-on to her weekly, tortuous gym workout. Being the impatient kind she never “warmed up or warmed down” so thought popping into the namby pamby yoga class after her gym workout would kill two birds with one stone!

After her third yoga session, she ditched the gym and has never looked back.

Without really ever meaning to, she finds herself now a qualified teacher and her only notable plan for the future is to live to 95 and to still be able to touch her toes.

Her teacher training was a combination of British Wheel of Yoga and Sivananda, gaining her Diploma in April 2004. In December 2005 she trained with David Swenson to teach the Ashtanga Primary Series. She loves the dynamic variety of practising all elements of yoga, from a simple single calming full lung breath to an energetic, sweat-inducing hour & a half’s physical Ashtanga workout.

Siobhan is also a Co-founder of The Self Centre .
